The Information Awareness Office of the DoD Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is led by Dr. John Poindexter, who was convicted of lying to Congress in the Iran-Contra drug-smuggling scandal, although his conviction was overturned on a technicality by appeal. Poindexter is just one of many liars, felons and drug-smugglers from the Bush I administration that received promotions under Bush II.
The plan calls for the collection of information from a staggering number of sources, such as banks, credit unions, health care organizations, the IRS and Social
Security agencies, the INS, the FBI, grocery chains and any number of other companies and government agencies (federal, state and local) that have records of individual transactions. The Evidence
Extraction and Link Discovery (
EELD) program of the IAO is the tie-in to surveillance of the Internet, to catch people like you who read pages like this.
According to the New York Times on February 12, 2003,
Congress pretended to bar using TIA on Americans, but in fact the
Pentagon just changed the name to Terrorist Information Awareness. The program receives
$53,752,000 per year just for one TIA component of the IAO
programmes, and
$150,000,000 overall, not counting the contributions from a number of other organizations in the
DoD and US Intelligence Community such as the CIA and DIA that have shown great interest in working with the TIA program.
The rape of your privacy is progessing at an astounding rate on numerous fronts. Some of the programs that we know of include:
CappsII: Computer Assisted Pre-Passenger Screening
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is now part of the Department of Homeland Security, is authorized by law to maintain a watchlist of names of individuals suspected of posing "a risk of air piracy or terrorism or a threat to airline or passenger safety." While initially denying to the media that such a list existed, the TSA finally acknowledged its existence in October 2002.
If you are flagged as red you may not only be denied boarding, but also undergo police questioning and possible arrest. And under the proposed rules for CAPPS II, once you're on the black-list, it's not known what you can do to get off.
Matrix: Multistate Anti-TeRrorism Information EXchange
When Iran-Contra felon John Poindexter's TotalInformationAwareness information office was apparently shut down, the project morphed into a federally-funded operation at the State level: the "Multistate Anti-TeRrorism Information EXchange".
Data mining is at the heart of the controversial MATRIX police database system and the federal authorities have been deeply involved in developing and paying for the state-run effort to spy on citizens.
NASA Data Mining and Aviation Security:
Computer scientists at NASA's Ames Research Center are developing a program for predicting terrorist threats by
integrating "the Internet and classified intelligence data" with information from two flight-safety databases.
The program is the second recent example of a NASA effort to mine information storehouses for enemies of the state. The
Electronic Privacy Information Center revealed that Northwest Airlines
forked over
millions of passenger records to the space agency for a terrorist-screening project, an effort enhanced with data from the
1990 U.S. census.
The lead contractor to provide software support on a $62,000,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for total information awareness support is
Booz Allen Hamilton a subsidiary of Haliburton, Dick Cheney's company, and a full-fledged member of the
Plutocracy.
The Department of Defense also
planned to use
Acxiom as the supplier of personal information for Total Information Awareness. A senior Acxiom official offered to help the agency with TIA, and
suggested methods to avoid public scrutiny of the transfer of data from the company to the government. Acxiom has records on 80% of the American and British population.
